As an obedient orphan of the U.N.A. (the super-country that was once Mexico, the U.S., and Canada), Alenna learned at an early age to blend in and be quiet—having your parents taken by the police will do that to a girl. But Alenna can’t help but stand out when she fails a test that all sixteen-year-olds have to take: The test says she has a high capacity for brutal violence, and so she is sent to The Wheel, an island where all would-be criminals end up.

The life expectancy of prisoners on The Wheel is just two years, but with dirty, violent, and chaotic conditions, the time seems a lot longer as Alenna is forced to deal with civil wars for land ownership and machines that snatch kids out of their makeshift homes. Desperate, she and the other prisoners concoct a potentially fatal plan to flee the island. Survival may seem impossible, but Alenna is determined to achieve it anyway.

Review:

The cover of this new dystopian trilogy, THE FORSAKEN, is enough to instantly pull readers in. This is not your average summer read. It’s not the nice contemporary novel that we read to escape in on a trip to the beach. Nope, this dystopian is packed with nonstop action that will draw readers into a world so unknown to them, they will have to keep reading to find out more.

After her parents were taken by the U.N.A. (a super-country made up of what was formerly Canada, the U.S., and Mexico) Alenna has learned to blend in and remain to herself. At the age of sixteen everyone goes through a personality test. It is designed to tell if anyone shows signs of rebellious behavior, antisocial activity, or brutal violence and anyone who fails is sent to Prison Island Alpha, or as some people call it, The Wheel. Once Alenna shuts her eyes in the testing room, the next time she wakes up, she finds herself on The Wheel.

The Wheel is basically where all the would-be criminals end up. It is a place with no vegetation and the life expectancy for prisoners on The Wheel is only two years. The Wheel is separated into sectors and thankfully for Alenna, she ends up in a good one. But when you’re in an unknown place with unknown people, you never know who is the right person to trust. On The Wheel Alenna meets the lovely, handsome, and strong Liam. He’s the first guy who’s ever showed interest in her, and the first guy she’s ever really noticed. Together, and with a few other members of their sector, they will find a way off of The Wheel and find a way to take back their freedom. No matter what the cost.

Alenna is a strong-willed character that is determined to do what she can to help herself and others. She goes through many obstacles and many startling surprises, but is always able to pull herself together and get through it. Lisa Stasse did a terrific job on her debut novel THE FORSAKEN. Her characters are all well developed, each of them having some sort of backstory that we can all relate to or understand.

This book definitely has a lot of action, that’ll keep readers entertained. THE FORSAKEN hits shelves July 10th, so don’t forget to get your copy once they hit shelves!
